 I am writing at the end of our first ever week of remote teacher training to let you know we miss you and hope you are all staying safe and healthy. Whether it’s walking home with a whiteboard through the streets of Brooklyn (making that home classroom happen!), or sharing practices on making remote learning accessible and engaging for our students, please know that BUGS staff is doing whatever it takes to keep our education community safe and connected. I could not be more proud of our team!

 Now we need your help to ensure the launch of remote learning is a success (although please bear with us as this is an entirely new initiative for our school). Even as we distributed laptops to families who needed them and lots of staff training, we know that there will be glitches along the way for all of us and appreciate your patience, flexibility, and support as we get this bold, new initiative going.

 Action Steps for Families and Students

A recorded info session will be available on the afternoon of March 20 and you can access at www.BUGSbrooklyn.org/remote-learning. 

In order to be easily accessible to the most people possible, this session will now be a recording and not live. You can view it any time. Once you view it, feel free to send us any questions at info@BUGSbrooklyn.org in response to it. 

1. Students Should Be Ready for Remote Learning Instruction on Monday, March 23

All BUGS students are expected to log into their Advisory class through Google Classroom by 8:15 a.m. on Monday, March 23. Teachers will be ready to provide student supports for navigating the first day of remote instruction. Students will follow their regular class schedule.

1. Show your Child that Remote Learning Matters and is an Opportunity!

We are working hard to ensure that we can continue to deliver high quality education that is also supportive of the whole child, sensitive to the situation, and fun.  Please encourage your students to bring their love of learning and connection to the BUGS community to their online classes and offline experiences. Specific student expectations will also be on the Remote Learning landing page of our website: www.BUGSbrooklyn.org/remote-learning 

1. Attendance will be taken for all students during remote learning. Students will be marked present or absent depending on whether they are logged into the remote learning class scheduled. 

Please email info@bugsbrooklyn.org if: 

- you know your child will not be able to attend remote learning on a particular day

- your child attempted to log into remote learning, but experienced technical difficulties 

Please keep in mind the following: 

- Attendance will not count towards grades during this time

- Attendance will not impact high school admissions 

The purpose of taking attendance is to help us keep count of student connectivity in order to support students' ability to participate in remote learning.

3/17 Remote Learning Update!

We hope this email finds you and your families safe and healthy, and vigilantly trying to stay that way;  enjoying moments when you can and finding ways to pull together (not physically! ;) ) as a community. We thank you for your many emails of support and appreciation as we took decisive action to transition to remote learning and continue to navigate this difficult time. (Please note: We have not been notified of any COVID-19 cases related to our BUGS learning community).   We are very pleased that the DOE followed suit with a transition to remote learning for the best interests of our NYC students, teachers, and families. 

Remote Learning 

Our staff have been working to prepare for Remote Learning.  I must say, our BUGS team is amazing, flexible, creative, learning fast, and committed to making this time positive and productive for the kids. Amidst the uncertainty and concern we all face, we’re bringing a sense of new opportunity and professional growth to the work! We know there will be kinks along the way, but we will work it out together. 

Here are some updates and additional information about BUGS transition to Remote Learning including new roll-out schedule.

There are some changes to the Remote Learning Launch:

We are no longer launching remote learning on Thursday March 19th. 

Friday, March 20:  12:00 noon (until approximately 1pm) there will be a BUGS Family Remote Learning Overview live stream for students and families that will then be recorded. 

It is required that families and students view the live stream and/or review the recording carefully together if they did not attend the live version. Instructions and details will be emailed shortly. 

Students will then ask their questions on Monday in their Advisory “class.” 

Monday, March 23:  Students will report to school by logging into their Google Classroom for their Advisory by 8 a.m. so they can join their first session at 8:15 a.m.. 

Further instructions will be posted when students login. Eventually, we expect students to follow their standard schedule via Google Calendar, with the exception of this first Monday, which may look different. Students will be directed by their advisors on next steps.

Technology Assistance

Tech Assistance is provided by emailing techteam@bugsbrooklyn.org.

A BUGS Remote Learning landing page on our website will provide on-going one-stop information. This page will be live Friday, March 20th.

Technology Access

All students will need a computer and wifi access to participate in Remote Learning optimally. Thanks to everyone who completed the tech surveys.  We have now reached all families and will distribute technology to those who need it. If you need a laptop/wifi and we have not contacted you, please contact us at techteam@bugsbrooklyn.org.

There are various offers from companies for free wifi and other resources that we will share on the Remote Learning landing page on the BUGS website and with follow up emails.  We are distributing paper packets as needed as well. We are committed to all of our students having the resources they need to access learning and being part of our online community.  

Students Who Cannot Be Home

Please see the NYC DOE Coronavirus updates page for information on centers throughout the city for the children of first responders, health care workers, and other families in need. This web page also has DOE updates, Coronavirus information, and Learn at Home resources for families.  

Building Access

March 17-19: Some staff will be at BUGS Tuesday through Thursday this week if families need access to student lockers or other items at school. No food or valuables should be left on the premises.  Please enter through the Main Lobby (not BUGS door) and check in at the BUGS Main Office. Technology distribution will also be happening at this time, as discussed with those who need it.  Please email info@BUGSbrooklyn.org or call the Main Office if you have any questions: (718) 280-9556 ext 200. 

School Food

March 16-20: Grab and go meals (breakfast and lunch together) are available for pickup 7:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. in the BUGS Main Entrance (Bishop Ford lobby). Families can also pick up meals at ant DOE school location that is convenient. Breakfast and lunch will be available together the entire time, and students are not required to be at the site for meal pick-up, any family member can get the meals.
 Week of March 23 onward: DOE will provide updates regarding more centralized locations to pick up meals.

State Testing

This is suspended, pending further instructions from the State. Please note that March 25 and March 26 which were scheduled to be half days for the State ELA exam, will now be full days of remote instruction as per students’ usual schedules.

IMPORTANT UPDATE on BUGS REMOTE LEARNING

Dear BUGS Families

We hope this email finds you safe and well.  As the COVID-19/coronavirus situation continues to evolve, please be assured that the BUGS team is working tirelessly to take actions that will best support children’s safety, health, social-emotional well-being and ongoing learning.  

After much consideration with the BUGS board and leadership, we have decided to transition promptly to remote learning at BUGS. As you know, we are closed Monday for a Professional Development day to help our staff prepare for remote learning. We will extend our Professional Development (PD) to Tuesday and Wednesday as well, at which time the school will be closed to students. Starting on Thursday, we will begin Remote Learning. All activity on school premises will be suspended during this time.  We currently anticipate students to be off-site from now until after Spring Break, returning Monday 4/20/20, but that is subject to change based on evolving information. FAQ’s and details on the Remote Learning Period will be forthcoming, as will updates on the status of State Testing.  

Please note, at this time there have been no reported cases of COVID-19 associated with our learning community that have been brought to our attention. 

The decision to transition to remote learning is both an effort to help mitigate our community’s risk, and in response to low student attendance at BUGS, with a third of our students absent on Friday, and even more absences anticipated next week. By transitioning to remote learning, we hope to preserve the safety and continued learning of every BUGS student. 

The schedule will be as follows:

• Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday  3/16- 3/18 Staff PD days -STUDENTS ARE OFF (NO REMOTE LESSONS)

• Thursday 3/19/20 REMOTE LEARNING PERIOD BEGINS and is currently planned to end when we return from Spring Break on Monday 4/20/20. 

  • We currently plan for Spring Break to remain as previously scheduled: Starting Thursday 4/9/20 and ending Sunday 4/19/20. 

• “To-go” bagged breakfasts and lunches will be distributed in the Main Entrance of the building if you need them.  Call the school for more information: (718) 280-9556.

In order to best prepare for continued learning, we have decided to close school for students on Monday 3/16/20 to allow all staff to have a Professional Development (PD) day devoted to remote learning strategies and planning time for remote lessons.  Providing remote instruction is largely new territory for us, and our team is working feverishly to design lessons for our staff that best prepare them to continue instruction with our students remotely should that be needed. Some classes are more conducive to remote learning than others, and there are a range of ways to provide this learning. It will be a fluid process and we will be learning along the way, but we are committed to providing your children the best education and supports.  Monday’s PD day is an important part of that. 

Home Technology Survey

Thanks to everyone who has completed the Home Tech survey. We still need ⅔ of our families to complete this important survey so that we can identify which students have access to devices and WiFi that can support online learning, and those who do not. All BUGS families should please complete this  Home Technology Survey by Monday March 16th 8am. This will help us with planning. Thank you.

• The BUGS Hornets game tomorrow, and all sports team games are cancelled until further notice. 

• The PTA Auction is being held virtually through on-line bidding on March 28th, see PTA emails for details. 

Keeping Healthy

Please continue to promote the utmost hygiene with your children and send them with extra sanitizer and/or disinfectant surface wipes for them to use throughout the day. If you have any extra hand sanitizer you can donate, please do send it in to the Main Office. This can help supplement our supply. Thank you. 

Thanks for working with us to keep our kids, families and staff safe and healthy. Please notify me promptly if there is anything we should know about.  As I said before, the Department of Health and Mental Health (DOHMH) will notify us if there are any confirmed cases related to our school. Please note (as per the New York State Education Department) that as a public school that receives public school funding, we have public accountability to provide education to all of our students.

Hola familias de BUGS

Para prepararnos mejor para el aprendizaje continuo, hemos decidido cerrar la escuela para los estudiantes el lunes 16/03/20 para permitir que todo el personal tenga un día de Desarrollo Profesional (PD) dedicado a estrategias de aprendizaje remoto y tiempo de planificación para lecciones remotas. Brindar instrucción remota es en gran medida un territorio nuevo para nosotros, y nuestro equipo está trabajando fervientemente para diseñar lecciones para nuestro personal que mejor los prepare para continuar la instrucción con nuestros estudiantes de forma remota si fuera necesario. Algunas clases son más propicias para el aprendizaje remoto que otras, y hay una variedad de formas de proporcionar este aprendizaje. Será un proceso fluido y aprenderemos en el camino, pero estamos comprometidos a brindarles a sus hijos la mejor educación y apoyo. El día de PD del lunes es una parte importante de eso.

Continúe promoviendo la máxima higiene con sus hijos y envíelos con un desinfectante adicional y / o toallitas desinfectantes para que puedan usar durante todo el día. High School Round One Offers

Dear 8th Grade Families, 

I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to inform you that the NYC DOE will make offer letters available in MySchools before March 20th. The DOE will also mail hard copies to families. Letters will include Specialized High School placement information for those students who completed both specialized and traditional high school application processes. The offer letter will also include a list of programs where your child has been waitlisted. Students will be automatically added to the waitlist of any program that they listed higher on their application than the program where they received an offer. Letters will NOT be distributed at school. However, should you need access to the letter, you will be able to contact me at anali.chavez@bugsbrookly.org and I will email you your child’s letter. Once an official date for letter availability in MySchools is released by the DOE, I will send an additional email to families informing you of the date and further waitlist information. 

Much of the application process has taken place in the smaller advisory classrooms, where students developed a sense of community and mutual respect for each other’s high school selection process. On March 9th, advisors will present a short powerpoint presentation to students that will provide guidance on how to read the letter and set norms for appropriate reactions. Over the next couple of days, please take some time to talk with your child about the possible news they will receive in the letter. You may also think about discussing how they should react and talk with their friends and classmates upon learning of their offers. We will be having these ongoing conversations with students, but, particularly at this sensitive and transformative time, a conversation with family and friends can be more meaningful and impactful. Specifically, we will be talking to students about how to be a good friend and a good community member in the tricky situations that will surely arise. Some students will be disappointed at not getting their first choice, even if they got a great placement. Still others, perhaps even closest friends, will want to celebrate their placements. Navigating this mix of joy and disappointment with respect, humility, and kindness is difficult at any age, and we deeply appreciate your support in this matter.

Estimada Familias de Octavo Grado, 

Espero que este correo electronico te encuentre bien. Le escribo para informarle que el NYC DOE pondrá a disposición cartas de oferta en MySchools antes del 20 de marzo.  El DOE tambien va enviar la carta por correo a familias. Cartas incluirán la información de ofertas para Escuelas Especializados de Escuela Secundaria para los estudiantes quienes applicaron para las escuelas especializados y tradicional. La carta de oferta también incluirá una lista de programas donde su hijo ha sido incluido en la lista de espera. Los estudiantes se agregarán automáticamente a la lista de espera de cualquier programa que hayan enumerado más arriba en su solicitud que el programa donde recibieron una oferta.
