Summer Assignments 2024!

Dear BUGS families,

Summer work for all students is now available. All summer assignments must be completed and submitted by Tuesday, September 3rd, 2024. Completing all assignments is key to unlocking your full potential. You'll solidify your existing skills and discover new ones, setting yourself up for success in the coming school year.

 Summer work is as follows:

Rising 6th Graders are those students starting 6th Grade in September 2024–Be on the lookout for a BUGS email that has been created for all rising 6th graders enrolled for the 2024/2025 school year.

Rising 7th Graders are those students starting 7th Grade in September 2024

  • Rising 7th graders will complete their ELA summer work in the google classroom folder. Link Here

  • Their math summer work is available on iReady. Students must sign in using their usual username and password. Please complete any outstanding assignments under “Teacher Assigned as well as the assignment on “My Path”.

Rising 8th Graders are those students starting 8th Grade in September 2024

We expect that students take this opportunity to prepare themselves for the upcoming school year, by using these summer assignments as a snapshot of the learning that they will engage in for the 2024-2025 school year. When students join us in the 24-25 school year, their submitted assignments will receive applicable feedback from their respective teachers. Summer assignments do not receive ongoing feedback from teachers during the summer, rather, our summer assignments are used to facilitate whole class connections, drive student discussions and create conversations within the classroom instruction that takes place at the launch of the school year.

Hope you all have a fun and safe summer!

Queridas familias BUGS,

Dear BUGS Families,

Thank you for continuing to be our partners in navigating the COVID pandemic. We have an important update. As you may have heard, the NYC DOE updated its COVID-19 guidance based on the new CDC recommendations. You can find the full webpage here, and I have copied in the updated guidance below.

Effective immediately, BUGS will align with the updated guidance of the NYC DOE (below) and the CDC to recommend that those with COVID should stay home based on symptoms, similar to the flu. There is no 5 day isolation requirement. See below for details. This guidance will apply to all students and staff at BUGS.

BUGS will continue to provide masks at school as needed, use air purifiers and open windows where practicable, and encourage good hand hygiene. Test kits will be available as needed for students (and staff).

As always, reach out to us at covid@bugsbrooklyn.org with any questions or concerns.

Thank you!

Ms. Cay & Ms. Aqilah

FROM NYC DOE: COVID-19 Guidance as of March 2024

  • Based on updated health guidance, instead of a minimum isolation period, people with COVID-19 should stay home and away from others based on their symptoms, similar to how they would for other respiratory infections, like flu and RSV.

    • If your child has COVID-19 symptoms, they should still get tested and separate from others right away.

    • Your child should stay home until, for at least 24 hours, they have had no fever without taking fever-reducing medicine and other COVID-19 symptoms are getting better.

    • If your child tests positive for COVID-19 but has no symptoms, they do not need to stay home but they still need to take the below steps to prevent spreading the virus to others.

  • Avoid getting others sick. Your child should follow these precautions when home sick and for the next five days after they return to school, work, and other activities, as they still may be contagious.

    • Wear a well-fitting mask that covers both the nose and mouth whenever around other people.

    • Continue to keep a distance from others, especially those at higher risk of serious illness. This includes people age 65 and older, people who have a weakened immune system, and people with underlying health conditions that increase the risk of serious illness.

    • When indoors and around others, take steps to improve ventilation if possible, such as opening windows and using an exhaust fan.

    • Practice good hygiene by covering coughs and sneezes, washing hands often, using hand sanitizer, and cleaning frequently touched surfaces.

    • If your child develops a fever or starts to feel worse after they have gone back to normal activities, they should stay home and away from others again until, for at least 24 hours, their symptoms are improving overall and they have not had a fever (and are not taking fever-reducing medicine). Then take the above additional precautions for the next 5 days.

BUGS Awards Fourth Year of Alumni Scholarships to Support Transition to College and Inspire Sustainability Thinking

BUGS is thrilled to announce the winners of the BUGS Class of 2019 Alumni College Scholarship to provide support in the transition to college. Congratulations to Sharon Gorden (North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University), who will receive $1,500, and runner-up Miliana Villalona (University at Albany), who will receive $500. We applaud the contribution and achievements of the 19 students who submitted applications and are excited to support our sustainability change makers. Please see excerpts from Sharon and Miliana’s applications below.

The scholarship was launched by the BUGS community to provide financial assistance to a student who embodies our C.A.R.E.S values and has taken the seeds sown at BUGS to continue to explore and fight for a sustainable future. The scholarship program was open to all members of the BUGS graduating 8th grade class of 2019 who are enrolling at college in fall 2023. Our many thanks to board members Jamal Deek for leading the scholarship initiative and Regina Lee Fechter for her generous support.

“As BUGS celebrates our 10th anniversary, I am truly honored and grateful that we have the opportunity to support these thoughtful, caring, and compassionate BUGS alumni. Thank you to all of the students who submitted applications for the scholarship program and to the teachers and board members who volunteered to serve on the scholarship committee. It means so much to us that the values and commitment to sustainability that these students learned at BUGS stay central to who they are and what they want to achieve. BUGS students are going to change the world.” -- Susan Tenner, Executive Director, Brooklyn Urban Garden Charter School.

Sharon Gorden (North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University)

“My experiences at BUGS and the encouragement of my teachers made me realize that I have a voice and it must be heard loud and clear. I insist that my community at college will hear my voice. I insist that my future career of business and entrepreneurship will serve my community with resources and give others the opportunity to share their voice. My voice will always be used to serve my community.”

Miliana Villalona (University at Albany)

“BUGS pushed me to always reach for my full potential and to always go the extra mile. BUGS supported me academically and emotionally. It was BUGS that helped with my self confidence and self-esteem. Because of the support, I was given the foundation to succeed. Because of BUGS, I am in a better position to pursue an education in law and a career in public service.”
