Welcome to BUGS!

We are excited to welcome students to our middle school (grades 6-8) who share our passion for environmental, social, and economic sustainability and want to be part of a community committed to building a more just, equitable, and sustainable world. Click here for our mission and founding story.

Through hands-on learning and real-world problem solving, BUGS students develop the critical thinking, analytic, and communication skills to be creative and compassionate thinkers, doers, and sustainability change makers.

BUGS supports student excellence and exploration through:

  • Passionate faculty who know, support, and challenge each of our students to be their very best.

  • A supportive, safe and diverse learning community that uses a whole child and restorative practices approach to building a “family-like” school culture that is culturally affirming and where students and teachers are treated with dignity and respect.

  • A rigorous science and math curriculum that builds mastery of concepts and key skills to prepare students for 8th grade Regents-level classes in Biology and Algebra 1 and for success in high school, college, and careers.

  • High School admissions support tor entry to best-fit schools that include sustainability and science focused programs (ie New York Harbor School, Leon Goldstein High School for Sciences), competitive exam schools (ie Brooklyn Tech, Bard), arts programs (LaGuardia, Murrow), alternative education models (ie NYCiSchool, Beacon) and many other great options.

  • Individual attention through co-teaching in core content classes, small class sizes, and daily advisory designed to foster strong student-teacher and student-student relationships.

  • Enrichment classes such as Technology/Graphic Design, Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA), and Spanish with opportunities to get involved in clubs, school government, National Junior Honor Society, free after school sports program and activities, and more.
